Catholic Priest, Rev Father Joseph Ahukanna of the Lagos Archdiocese has described the 'Change' mantra of the APC-led federal administration as deceitful and decidedly anti-poor. "During the campaigns, they promised to fix Nigeria in six months and on the basis of that, you all voted for them. But almost one and half years down the line, the change they promised has not come, rather the suffering of the masses has become worse than before," he charged during a sermon at his St Jude Catholic Church, Mafoluku, Oshodi, Lagos, In celebrating the day's mass which featured the mandatory three readings that combined to produce the theme of 'honesty, trust and prayer of the faithful', which formed the fulcrum of preaching in Catholic Mass celebrations throughout the world yesterday, Father Ahukanna noted that "everywhere you go now, from Lagos to other cities in the country, there is suppression of the poor; there is injustice against the poor. There is just too much suffering in the land now and this is certainly not the change that people voted for." He added: "Some people have predicted that the way things are going, the naira will sooner than later fall to 1,000 to one dollar. When that happens, what life will be left for the poor and the needy to live, for it is they who will bear the brunt of it all. They say that the immediate past government and the one before it were corrupt but what have they who are not corrupt got to show for the change they promised? If we are so helpless now, if it is so bad now for us, consider what the future holds for our children. It is a bleak future for them, indeed. "And I say to you who call yourselves clever businessmen, who are 'enterprising' businessmen and storing up your goods to sell them at that time when the dollar will be so high so you can sell them and make big profit. Remember that what goes around comes around. For, when you finish selling your old goods at new price, will you not go back to buy new stocks at the new price? God is watching every dishonest move we make and shall judge us all by every action we have taken in this life." Excoriating politicians further for their dishonesty, Fr Ahukanna said: "They do not do anything now for the masses. They will wait until about three months to another election and they will flash amenities here and there to make the people vote for them again. I advise them to remember that the Lord swore by the pride of Jacob His servant that He would never forget a single thing they have done." The cleric admonished the people to cry to God in prayers, for those in authority so they can change and do the right thing, as it is only God that can change them. "This is what God expects us to do. After we have done our part and they still fail to live up to expectation, we leave them to God to deal with them." Posted by-Abdul (Nigerianbulletin) |
