Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has appointed a military officer convicted of plotting a coup against him as a minister.

On Sunday, President Jammeh fired long serving interior minister Ousman Sonko and replaced him immediately with Momodou Alieu Bah, who helped mount a coup against him in 2006.

Previously, Bah served as Finance Director for the Gambian armed forces.

After his conviction in 2006, he was sent to prison for 25 years. He was however granted amnesty in 2010 after he testified during the trial of the chief of defence staff of the Gambia Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Lang Tombong Tamba.

Jammeh has fended off several coup attempts since he became president in 1994.
